I never expected to be that up close and personal with one of the most voluptuous sex symbols of Hollywood, right out there in the country 40 miles southeast of Reno, Nevada.
My head was just about level with Marilyn Monroe’s breasts, which was not due to her being exceptionally tall or me being uncharacteristically short.
The fact is, I was only nine years old and I was certainly more interested in the colorful rodeo clowns and big horses.
The back-story is that we were there on an open set for the filming of a movie by the famous director, John Huston, called The Misfits.
This topic came up a while ago when a missing videotape of the movie production hit eBay, which lead me to write about our own family’s private video of that famous filming.
Maybe Meg Whitman might be interested with bidding on this cherished celluloid.
Today, I happened to read that this weekend is the 50th Anniversary of that movie making event. The movie, which developed a following beyond its acclaim, had the distinction of being the last one that both iconic stars of their time would ever make.
“…the film has developed a cult following since the deaths of its stars, who played characters much like themselves. Just 12 days after filming ended, [Clark] Gable died of a heart attack at age 59. Less than 21 months later, Monroe died of a drug overdose at age 36 in what was ruled a suicide.”
If you are looking for a road trip for this weekend, you might consider a trip up to Dayton. You might already be up in that general neck-of-the-woods for the Reno Air Races. Taking a day trip to Dayton to get away from the predicted crowd of 200,000 air race fanatics might just be what you need.
While you are not likely to meet the real Marilyn Monroe or Clark Gable, you might think you were having a vision of them, as there will be a look-alike contest that is being held in conjunction with the local celebration of the movie’s anniversary.
“Join the weekend of fun when anyone any age is invited to compete in the Marilyn Monroe and Clark Gable "look-alike" contest. Contestants will be featured in the Misfits Parade with judges on the look out.”
What is the chance you will find someone with these drop-dead gorgeous starlet looks?
What do you think?
